An Artistic Exploration of the Transformation of an Urban Neighborhood

T RÄUME
An Artistic Exploration of the Transformation of an Urban Neighborhood
24 portraits. One urban quarter. An entire day.
What makes a place what it is? Is it its buildings, its history—or, above all, the people who bring it to life?
The photo exhibition “TRÄUME” by photographer Julian Schulz explores the Werksviertel-Mitte from various perspectives. Over the course of an entire day, we encounter 24 people whose personal stories, work, and ideas shape the neighborhood’s historic and newly developed spaces.
From early morning until late at night, a multifaceted portrait of the Werksviertel emerges: a place where past and present converge, where historic buildings stand alongside new architecture, and where a wide variety of uses and ways of life are interconnected.
Yet this is about more than just architecture. After all, a city’s spaces are always an expression of human ideas and dreams. Every building, every studio, every restaurant, every hotel, and every cultural venue embodies the work and imagination of many people. What is reality today was once a vision.
TRÄUME therefore focuses not only on the Werksviertel as it is today, but also on what it can become. The 24 portraits tell the stories of people who are actively shaping this transformation—and of their very personal perspectives on this special place.
The exhibition is a project of the Werksviertel-Mitte Foundation to mark its 30th anniversary. For three decades, the foundation has accompanied the development of the urban district on the former Pfanni production site. To celebrate this anniversary, it turns its attention to history and stories: to the spaces of the former Pfanni factories and to the people who bring both the historic and the newly created spaces to life with their ideas and their work.
Complementing the photographs, in-depth interviews give the subjects a voice of their own. Daniel Wiechmann conducted the interviews, thereby creating a further personal connection to the people and their stories. The exhibition is also accompanied by a magazine dedicated to the project, which brings together the photographic works and interviews and preserves an insight into this special chapter of the Werksviertel beyond the exhibition itself.
And perhaps, while viewing the images, a very personal question will arise:
What will people recognize 100 years from now in what we are creating today?
